La infección del sistema de marcapasos es una complicación grave e incluso letal. Se analizan las infecciones del sistema y las formas recomendadas de tratamiento.

La extracción del sistema y fundamentalmente del electrodo roto o infectado plantea problemas técnicos. En ciertos casos pueden extraerse los electrodos por vía percutánea, si bien en diversas circunstancias es obligado el acceso quirúrgico.

Puede ser necesario en ocasiones, por agotamiento de las posibilidades de acceso convencional a los electrodos, el uso de una vía alternativa de implante de marcapasos permanente. Como posibilidad alternativa al implante epicárdico se ha usado la vía femoral para la estimulación permanente.
